How to Care for Curly Hair in Bendigo’s Dry Climate

Living in Bendigo means beautiful landscapes, bright sunshine, and… some seriously dry air. For curly-haired folks, that combination can leave curls feeling flat, frizzy, or thirsty no matter how much product you use.

But don’t stress! With the right routine (and a few climate-specific tricks), your curls can stay hydrated, defined, and happy all year round.

🌬️ Why Bendigo’s Climate Is Tough on Curls

Curls already need extra moisture, and Bendigo’s dry air pulls that moisture out faster. This can lead to:

  • Frizz

  • Dryness and brittleness

  • Loss of definition

  • Excess tangling

  • Dullness

Understanding the climate helps you build a routine that works with your curls, not against them.

💧 1. Hydration Is Your Best Friend

Choose the right weight of moisturiser

This is one of the biggest issues we see with curly clients.

Many people with curls (especially fine or low-density hair) use products that are simply too heavy.
Fine hair can't “store” the weight of heavy butters or oils, so the hair ends up flat, coated, or easily overwhelmed.

If your hair is fine, low-density, or easily weighed down, choose lightweight hydrating products instead of heavy creams or oils.

Deep Condition (the right way)

Deep conditioning is essential in a dry climate — but using the correct formula is just as important.

Two treatments we love:

✨ JessiCurl Deep Conditioning Treatment
Hydrating, curl-friendly, and lightweight enough for most curly types.

✨ Organic Cinnamon & Patchouli Deep Treatment
Rich nourishment with natural ingredients — available for take-home and as an in-salon treatment.

Use a deep conditioner once a week if your curls feel dry or brittle.

A note on cool water

Cool water doesn’t actually “close” the cuticle, but it can help reduce frizz by smoothing the surface of the hair.
Think of it as a gentle finishing step rather than a magical seal.

🌀 2. Style for Definition and Climate Protection

Don’t use oils, especially in dry climates

Oils may feel hydrating, but they actually create a barrier that blocks real moisture from getting in.
Because oils and water don’t mix, this can:

  • Make curls drier over time

  • Create buildup that's hard to cleanse

  • Feel too heavy for most hair types

  • Prevent curl clumps from forming properly

Moisture comes from water + water-based products, not oils.

Layer your products intentionally

A simple, effective routine for Bendigo’s dry climate is:

Lightweight leave-in → Curl cream (appropriate weight) → Gel

This combo keeps curls hydrated, clumped, and protected from the dry air.

☀️ 3. Protect Your Curls from Bendigo’s Sun

UV exposure is one of the fastest ways curls lose moisture.

We recommend:

✨ Organic Ultimate Hair Enhancer (now in 100% recycled plastic!)

This lightweight UV spray:

  • Protects colour

  • Repairs and restores

  • Helps detangle

  • Adds soft slip without heaviness

A perfect option for fine, medium, or coarse curls.

Wear a hat or scarf on really sunny days for extra protection.

🌙 4. Night-Time Protection Makes a Huge Difference

Because Bendigo’s air is dry, moisture escapes while you sleep too.

Try:

  • A silk or satin pillowcase

  • A loose pineapple

  • A silk bonnet or scarf

This reduces friction and stretch, helping curls last longer between washes.

💨 5. Diffusing Without Damaging Curls

There’s a huge myth that diffusers cause heat damage.
🟢Diffusers don’t heat-damage the hair! 🟢

Curls actually handle diffusing beautifully if you use the right technique:

  • Use medium to high heat, low airflow

  • Avoid “blasting” the curls with strong air — that pulls curl clumps apart

  • Think strength in numbers — clumps dry better together

  • Dry gently, slowly

  • Don’t dry 100% — stop around 80–90% for soft, frizz-free curls

Heat protectant is optional with diffusing because the temperature is controlled and evenly distributed.

🧴 6. Keep the Scalp Healthy Too

Dry climates often mean dry scalps.
To help:

  • Use a gentle exfoliating treatment every couple of weeks

  • Avoid stripping shampoos

  • Make sure your conditioners and stylers are water-based, not oil-based

  • Don’t overwash! Curls hold up well with less frequent cleansing

Healthy scalp = happy curls.
