Why We Use Genderless Pricing (and What It Means for You)
For a long time, hair salons have priced services based on gender. You may have seen menus divided into “men’s cuts” and “women’s cuts”, often with very different prices attached.
At Mikaela Jane Hair, we take a different approach. Our pricing is genderless, meaning services are priced based on the time, technique, and products required, rather than assumptions about who the service is for.
This approach helps us create a salon experience that is more inclusive, more transparent, and more reflective of the work involved in each appointment.
Hair. Doesn’t. Have. A. Gender.
Hair services vary enormously depending on the individual. Two clients may want the same haircut, but their hair type, density, length, and styling needs can make the appointment completely different in terms of time and technique.
Traditional gender-based pricing doesn’t reflect this reality very well. A short haircut on thick curly hair may take longer than a long straight haircut, yet the price might traditionally be determined by whether it’s listed under a “men’s” or “women’s” category.
By focusing on the work involved, genderless pricing allows us to price services more accurately and fairly.
What Genderless Pricing Looks Like
Instead of separating services by gender, our pricing is based on factors such as:
The time required for the appointment
The complexity of the service
The amount of product used
The techniques involved
For example, a precision haircut that requires extra shaping and styling time may be priced differently from a simple maintenance trim, regardless of who is receiving the service.
This means every client is quoted based on their individual hair and goals, rather than a category on a traditional salon menu.
A More Inclusive Salon Experience
Gendered service menus can unintentionally make people feel uncomfortable or excluded, particularly if the available options don’t reflect how they identify.
Genderless pricing removes that barrier. It allows clients to choose the service that suits their hair and style, without having to navigate labels that may not feel relevant to them.
For us, this is part of creating a salon environment where everyone feels welcome and respected.
Transparency and Fairness
Another benefit of genderless pricing is clarity. Clients know that the price of their appointment is based on the actual service being provided, not on assumptions about who they are.
Before starting any service, we always take time to discuss:
Your hair goals
The techniques involved
The expected time required
An estimate of the cost
This consultation ensures there are no surprises and that you feel comfortable with the plan for your hair.
Personalised Haircare
Hair is incredibly individual. Texture, curl pattern, density, colour history, and lifestyle all affect what your hair needs.
By removing gender from the pricing structure, we can focus on what really matters: providing the right service for your hair.
Whether you’re looking for a precise haircut, a colour transformation, or support caring for curly hair in Bendigo’s dry climate, our goal is always the same — to create a service tailored to you.
A Small Change That Makes a Big Difference
Genderless pricing may seem like a small adjustment, but it reflects a larger philosophy. Haircare should be personalised, transparent, and accessible to everyone.
By focusing on time, technique, and expertise, we aim to make every appointment feel fair, respectful, and centred around the individual in the chair.
If you have any questions about our services or how pricing works, you’re always welcome to reach out here. We’re happy to talk through your options and help you find the right appointment for your hair.
